What "affordable" buys you here

The affordable cabinet lines on our floor are not a different grade of cabinet; they are a shorter menu. Each one has a plywood box, dovetailed solid-wood drawer boxes, soft-close hinges and under-mount glides and a factory-applied finish — the same baseline we would want in any kitchen — in a dozen or two stocked door-and-colour combinations instead of a fan deck. Because the colours are stocked, the cabinets ship in days to weeks and the price per foot is the lowest in the showroom.

They are the right answer for a rental, a flip, a first kitchen, a basement or a budget that has to cover the whole room: cabinets, counters, tile and installation. They are also what we recommend when a customer loves a stocked white or grey shaker and does not need an unusual width — there is no reason to pay semi-custom money for a colour that is already on a shelf in New Jersey.

FGM, 21st Century, WoodConcept, J&K and Adornus Essential

Five stock lines warehoused in or near New Jersey — FGM in Linden (twenty minutes from Union), 21st Century in Moorestown with seventeen in-stock colours including a green and a navy, WoodConcept in South Plainfield with a slim-shaker series in black and natural maple, J&K with twenty-three all-wood combinations through its Westbury, NY wholesaler, and Adornus Essential, a frameless plywood line in Pure White, Natural Stain and White Oak from East Windsor. All solid-wood doors on plywood boxes; all soft-close.

Fabuwood Signature colours

Fabuwood is a semi-custom line, but its stocked "Signature" colours — Frost white, Dove grey, Timber, Natural Oak and the rest — ship in about two weeks and price at the bottom of the semi-custom range, which is why the Union Ocean Blue kitchen and the Oradell Galaxy Dove kitchen cost less than their size suggests. Where the money goes in a budget kitchen

With cabinets at Level I, the countertop level and the installation scope decide the rest of the number. Our estimate lists cabinets, countertops, tile, hardware and installation as separate lines, so you can see what moving the sink or adding a tall pantry costs before you decide — and swap a quartz for a Level I quartz without re-quoting the kitchen. We do not sell financing; we keep the price low by selling direct from three showrooms.

What to check on any low-priced cabinet

• Box material. Plywood (every line here) or dense furniture board with sealed edges; avoid thin particleboard. See plywood vs particleboard.
• Drawer boxes. Dovetailed solid wood on under-mount, full-extension soft-close glides.
• Hinges. Six-way adjustable, soft-close, concealed.
• Finish. Factory-applied conversion varnish or UV finish; touch-up kits available.
• Warranty. Written, from the manufacturer — two to five years on the stock lines here, limited lifetime on Fabuwood.
