Kitchen remodel cost in New Jersey — what moves the number, and how to get yours
Four lines set the cost of a New Jersey kitchen remodel: the cabinet level, the countertop level, the layout changes and the installation. This page explains each, the three scopes we price most, and how to walk out of a showroom with a real line-by-line number for your room — free, the same visit.
What actually sets the number
Every kitchen remodel estimate we write has the same lines on it, and the same four of them move the total. Knowing which they are is worth more than an average price.
| Line | What moves it | How much it moves |
|---|---|---|
| Cabinets | The level — stocked, semi-custom or custom and inset — then the number of cabinets, tall units, modifications, glass, panels and hoods | The largest line; the level alone can double it |
| Countertops | The slab level (every material is grouped by level), the square footage, waterfalls and slab backsplashes | Second largest; a waterfall or slab wall adds a slab |
| Trade work | Removing a wall, moving the sink, new circuits, lighting, permits | From nothing to a major line |
| Installation | Room size, inset or frameless (tighter tolerances), demolition, trim | A steady line that scales with the room |
| Tile, hardware, lighting, appliances | Backsplash material, pulls and knobs, pendants, the appliance package (bought elsewhere or through us) | Smaller lines, easiest to adjust |
Three scopes
- Refresh. Same layout, new cabinets in a stocked line, new counters and backsplash, existing appliances. The shortest and least expensive remodel; the Cranford Petit White kitchen is this scope done well.
- Remodel. Semi-custom cabinets drawn to the room, an island, new counters, tile and lighting, some plumbing and electrical — most kitchens on this site, such as the Oradell kitchen and the Livingston kitchen.
- Full gut. Walls moved, the sink relocated, new circuits, custom or inset cabinetry, stone backsplashes, the whole room to the studs — the rift white oak kitchen, the Hale Navy inset kitchen.
Where New Jersey is different
Older housing stock — Capes, split-levels, pre-war colonials — means walls that are rarely square and floors that are rarely level, which is installation time, not cabinet money. Most towns require a permit when plumbing, electrical or structure changes; we tell you with the estimate and schedule the inspections. And the lines we sell are close: Fabuwood in Newark, Forevermark in Edison, FGM in Linden, WoodConcept in South Plainfield, which keeps freight and lead times down.
How to keep the number down without regretting it
- Keep the sink where it is and keep the walls; put the money into the cabinet level you will touch every day.
- Choose a stocked colour in a semi-custom line (Fabuwood Signature) rather than a custom colour in a stocked line that cannot do it.
- Use the second colour on the island only; two-tone costs nothing extra in the same line.
- Pick the countertop by level, not by name: a Level I quartz and a Level I granite cost the same installed.
- Buy the backsplash slab from the counter's remnant where the layout allows.
What the estimate looks like
Cabinets by line and door, with every modification listed; countertops by slab level with templating and installation; tile by material; hardware; installation; trade work; permits. You can change any line and see the total move without re-quoting the rest, and compare two cabinet lines in the same layout. Our guide to what drives cabinet cost and the New Jersey pricing guide go deeper on the cabinet line; the remodel timeline covers the schedule.
