Kitchen cabinet brands in the United States: who makes what, and how to tell them apart

Every few months somebody walks into one of our showrooms with a printed list of cabinet brands and letter grades. We understand the appeal — there are more than 150 names out there — but a grade hides the one thing that actually matters: what kind of company is behind the box. A home-centre line, a dealer-only semi-custom plant, a family custom shop and an importer that assembles in a New Jersey warehouse are four different businesses with four different ways of pricing, building, delivering and standing behind a kitchen. So this guide sorts the market by ownership, plant, construction and sales channel instead, says plainly which fifteen lines we sell and why, and tells you what to ask any brand before you sign. Everything here comes from the makers' own pages, their filings and the trade press as of October 2026; where we could not verify something, we say so rather than guess.

How to read this guide (and why we don't grade)

A cabinet is a box, a door, a drawer, a hinge and a finish. Almost every brand on this page now sells a plywood box, a dovetailed drawer and soft-close hardware at some price level, so "quality" has become less about the parts and more about the company: who owns it, where the plant is, whether the line is built to order or pulled from stock, and whether it is sold through a dealer who designs and installs or through a home centre that hands you a kit. Those are the four things we track for every brand below.

We do not publish grades. A grade would have to be ours, and we sell fifteen of these lines — you would be right to wonder. What we do instead is name what each brand is for: Fabuwood is a stocked semi-custom line with weeks-not-months lead times; Kith is custom-shop flexibility at a semi-custom price; Forevermark is the budget line that still gives you solid-wood drawers and soft-close; Plain & Fancy is hand-built custom with colours matched to a paint chip. A kitchen fails when the wrong kind of line is bought for the job, not usually because a brand is "bad". Where a line has a real limitation — a shorter warranty, fewer sizes, a particleboard box in a lower tier — it is written here, in plain words.

Three terms you will see throughout. Stock means fixed sizes and colours kept in a warehouse. Semi-custom means built to order from a catalogue of sizes, doors and finishes, often with modifications. Custom means built to your drawing. Our stock vs semi-custom vs custom guide goes deeper; the short version is that the tiers overlap more every year, which is exactly why the company behind the line matters more than the label.

The industry in 2026: three groups, hundreds of independents, and the importers

Most of the cabinets sold in American home centres come from two companies, and 2026 made it one and a half. MasterBrand (Beachwood, Ohio; spun out of Fortune Brands in 2022) owns Aristokraft, Decorá, Diamond, Omega, Schrock, Homecrest, Kitchen Craft, Mantra, Kemper, Mid Continent, StarMark, Fieldstone, UltraCraft, Dura Supreme, Bertch, Thomasville and Urban Effects, and on May 28 2026 it completed an all-stock merger with American Woodmark (Winchester, Virginia), bringing Shenandoah, Waypoint, Timberlake, 1951 Cabinetry and the Hampton Bay and allen+roth house programmes under the same roof. MasterBrand's own filings put Lowe's at roughly a fifth of its sales and Home Depot at about an eighth; American Woodmark's last annual report had the two home centres at 41 percent of its sales combined.

The other giant is Cabinetworks Group (Livonia, Michigan), the private company formed in 2020 when ACProducts bought Masco's cabinet division — KraftMaid, Merillat, Quality Cabinets and Cardell — for about a billion dollars; it also owns Medallion, Yorktowne, Smart Cabinetry and Design-Craft. Platinum Equity has owned it since 2021. It has had a hard few years: multifamily plants in Texas closed in 2024, two Pennsylvania plants closed in December 2024 and December 2025, and in May 2026 it refinanced with roughly $100 million of new first-lien loans. None of that changes the cabinet you receive, but it is worth knowing when a brand's warranty is a promise from its owner.

Then come the independents — family plants such as Wellborn in Alabama, Showplace in South Dakota, Crystal in Minnesota, Plain & Fancy and Wood-Mode in Pennsylvania, W.W. Wood Products (Shiloh and Eclipse) in Missouri and Great Northern in Wisconsin, plus private-equity-owned plants such as Kith in Alabama — and a category that barely existed twenty years ago: companies that source components overseas and assemble, finish or simply stock them in American warehouses. Fabuwood, Forevermark, CNC, Cubitac, J&K, FGM, 21st Century, WoodConcept and the online RTA sellers all live here, and several of them are within an hour of our showrooms. The honest description, which Fabuwood, Wolf and WoodConcept all use themselves, is "assembled in the USA from globally sourced components." It is neither a secret nor a flaw; it is how a plywood box with dovetail drawers and Blum hardware reaches a Level I price. Our American-made cabinets page lists which of our lines are built in a U.S. plant start to finish.

The home-centre names

If you have priced a kitchen at Home Depot or Lowe's, these are the brands on the quote. They are real cabinets from real plants — several share factories with dealer lines — but you buy them through a store associate, and the design, measuring and installation are separate services.

The practical difference from a showroom line is service, not the box. A home-centre kitchen is designed by a store associate, delivered to your driveway and installed by a subcontractor you book separately; a dealer draws it, orders it, receives it, inspects it and installs it with its own crew — that is the model every line on this page below the home-centre tier is built around, and it is why KraftMaid also sells through dealers.

Dealer semi-custom: the built-to-order middle of the market

This is where most kitchens are bought. Every line is built to order from a catalogue of door styles, sizes and finishes, sold only through dealers, and delivered in weeks rather than days. The plants are mostly American; the differences are in the breadth of the catalogue, the speed, and how far "modification" goes.

Two notes on reading this table. First, "semi-custom" stretches from Fabuwood's stocked Signature colours at one end to Shiloh's beaded-inset doors in a Sherwin-Williams colour at the other, which is why our Fabuwood vs Shiloh guide exists. Second, the lines that belong to a public company are only as stable as the parent's plans: MasterBrand closed plants in North Carolina in 2025 and consolidated brands in Kinston, and it says nothing publicly about which brands survive the Woodmark merger long term.

Custom shops: built to your drawing

Custom means the cabinet is built to the sixteenth of an inch for your wall, usually by hand, usually in eight to twelve weeks, and the finish can be anything you can show the plant. The best custom shops are family businesses with one plant, and several of the most important ones are within a three-hour drive of New Jersey.

Wood-Mode · BrookhavenKreamer, Pennsylvania · 1942Calls itself the country's largest custom cabinetry manufacturer; one 1.2-million-square-foot plant; framed, frameless and inset; Brookhaven is its semi-custom line. Kountry KraftNewmanstown, Pennsylvania · 1959, Hurst familyMade to order with a published eight-week lead time; a "Textural Cabinetry" line of textured fronts; about 70 percent sold through dealers.
Quality Custom Cabinetry (QCCI) · Signature · Adelphi · Village HandcraftedNew Holland, Ephrata, Robesonia and Lansdale, PennsylvaniaThe Pennsylvania custom belt: QCCI (1968, inset to full access, 150 people); Signature (1989, interlocking French dovetails, designers only); Adelphi (1946, about sixty kitchens a week); Village Handcrafted (2000). See our East Coast guide.
Grabill · Holiday Kitchens · Koch · Haas · CandlelightIndiana · Wisconsin · Kansas · Indiana · New YorkGrabill (Dovetail Brands since 2022); Holiday (Rice Lake, 1946, fully custom at several price points); Koch (Seneca, 1989, 900 employees across five plants); Haas (Sellersburg, 1939, announced closure in 2024 — status unconfirmed); Candlelight (Lockport, 1990) shut in January 2026 and was bought and restarted as Candlelight Curated in spring 2026 with $11 million of new investment.

The lesson from Wood-Mode, Haas and Candlelight is not that custom shops are risky; it is that a warranty is only as good as the company that still exists to honour it. Ask who owns the plant and how long they have owned it. Then ask whether the dealer in front of you has delivered that brand before — a custom order is a relationship between three parties, and the dealer is the one you can drive to.

Stock, import and RTA: fast and inexpensive, read the spec

This tier delivers a plywood box with dovetail drawers in days, which was unthinkable at this price fifteen years ago. The companies are importers, assemblers and stocking wholesalers; what separates them is the construction spec, the warranty and whether anyone local stands behind them. Four of our Level I lines sit here, and we chose them because their specs read like the tier above.

The thing to check in this tier is the box and the warranty, line by line. A ½" plywood side with a dovetailed drawer is now normal here; a three-year painted-finish warranty is also normal, and that is the trade-off for the price. Our plywood vs particleboard guide explains what to look for inside the box.

Flat-pack and the Europeans

IKEA Sektion is the flat-pack standard, with a free 25-year limited warranty and a whole after-market of doors from Semihandmade (Duarte, California, 2010) and the Danish studio Reform, which opened a Dumbo flagship in 2022. Semihandmade's Boxi line sells complete pre-assembled kitchens direct.

At the other end, the German and Italian houses sell frameless kitchens through company studios: Poggenpohl (Herford, 1892; U.S. arm founded in New Jersey in 1986, now under China's Jomoo Group after a 2020 insolvency; SoHo and Midtown studios), SieMatic (Löhne, 1929; Midtown flagship), bulthaup (Bavaria, 1949), Scavolini (Pesaro, 1961; SoHo flagship), Snaidero (1946; Snaidero USA in Los Angeles with about twenty showrooms and a high-rise focus), LEICHT (1928), nobilia (1945; 3,500 kitchens a day, first U.S. showrooms in Miami in 2024) and Boffi (Lombardy). They are beautiful, they are expensive, and their frameless construction is exactly what Eclipse, Adornus Alusso, NOMA and Fabuwood Illume reproduce at American prices — our frameless cabinets page shows the options side by side.

Why we sell the fifteen we sell

We could carry forty logos. We carry fifteen because each one does a job the others do not, and because we have installed enough of each to know how it arrives, how it finishes and who answers the phone when a door is wrong. Lowest price to highest, by the levels on our estimates:

  • Level I — stocked in New Jersey, days away: Forevermark for the lowest price with a solid-wood drawer and 22 styles that follow the trends (its Petit collection gives the slim-shaker-and-white-oak look at the lowest price in the showroom — see our Cranford kitchen); FGM, J&K, 21st Century and WoodConcept because each is warehoused within forty minutes of Union and each gives a plywood box, dovetail drawers and soft-close at the same money; Adornus Essential for stocked frameless.
  • Level I–II — Fabuwood: the line that behaves like stock and semi-custom at once. Signature colours ship in weeks; Allure is framed, Illume and Ovela frameless; the warranty is limited lifetime; and it is built twenty minutes from our Union showroom, so a replacement door is a drive, not a freight claim. It is the backbone of our volume for a reason.
  • Level II — Kith, St. Martin, NOMA: Kith because KithOne's one-price catalogue turns custom-shop choice into a simple quote, from a plant that has built in Haleyville since 1998 (owned by the private-equity firm Pfingsten Partners since 2016); St. Martin and NOMA because they are the best value we have found in built-to-order frameless and inset, with a water-based brush finish and a 2026 palette that reads like a designer's mood board.
  • Level II–III — Shiloh and Eclipse: the step-up for anyone who wants inset, beaded inset, rift white oak, walnut or a Sherwin-Williams colour without going fully custom; Eclipse gives the same doors on a frameless box plus the acrylic and textured slab fronts you otherwise see only in the European studios.
  • Level III — Great Northern: Wisconsin family custom at a semi-custom price when a kitchen needs eleven species, hand-applied stains or inset on a framed box.
  • Level III+ — Plain & Fancy and Crystal: when the only answer is custom: Plain & Fancy for hand-built framed and 32-mm frameless with colours matched to a chip, delivered on their own trucks from Pennsylvania; Crystal for the deepest door library in the building — 80 styles in twelve species — and a cerused oak none of our other lines offers.

What we do not carry tells you as much. No home-centre programmes, because the service model is the point of a showroom. No online-only RTA, because we install what we sell. And no line whose parent we could not name. Our ranked guide to our fifteen lines goes rung by rung.

What to ask any brand before you sign

Seven questions sort the market faster than any grade.

  1. Who owns it, and where is the plant? A brand whose owner changed last year is not a problem; a brand that cannot tell you is.
  2. What is the box? Plywood or furniture board, how thick, and is the upgrade included in the quote you are holding.
  3. What is the drawer? Solid-wood dovetail on undermount soft-close is the current baseline at every level we sell; metal drawers (Blum Merivobox, Legrabox) are an upgrade in frameless lines, not a downgrade.
  4. What is the finish, and what does the warranty say about it? Every maker excludes finish movement at joints on painted doors; the difference is whether it is two years, five or lifetime, and who files the claim.
  5. Is it KCMA certified? The ANSI/KCMA A161.1 seal means the structure, drawers, doors and finish were tested to simulate a lifetime of use — shelves loaded at 15 pounds per square foot for a week, drawers cycled 25,000 times, doors swung 25,000 times with a 65-pound weight hung on them, finishes held at 120°F and 70 percent humidity and exposed to household foods and detergents. The Environmental Stewardship Program is a separate, audited green certification. Not every good maker bothers with the seal, but it is a fact you can check.
  6. What is the real lead time for the door and colour you chose? Stocked colours and made-to-order colours from the same brand can be six weeks apart.
  7. Who installs it, and who fixes it? The honest answer from a home centre is "a contractor"; the honest answer from us is our own crew, and the warranty claim goes through our desk.

Bottom line

Sort cabinet brands by the company behind them, not by a letter. The home-centre names (KraftMaid, Thomasville, Hampton Bay, Diamond, allen+roth, Shenandoah) are real cabinets with a separate service model; the dealer semi-custom plants (Fabuwood, Shiloh, Kith, St. Martin, Medallion, StarMark, Wellborn, Showplace and the rest) are built to order and installed by the people who sold them; the custom shops (Plain & Fancy, Crystal, Wood-Mode, Rutt, Crown Point and the Pennsylvania belt) build to your drawing; and the import-and-stock tier (Forevermark, FGM, J&K, 21st Century, WoodConcept, CNC, Cubitac) delivers a plywood box in days if you read the spec and the warranty. We carry fifteen lines across those tiers because each does a job the others do not — bring a quote from any brand on this page to Union, Paramus or Rochelle Park and we will price the equivalent, line by line, over a free 3D design.

Good to know

Questions on this topic

Which kitchen cabinet brands are made in the United States?
Most dealer semi-custom and custom brands are built in American plants: Shiloh and Eclipse in Missouri, Kith in Alabama, Crystal in Minnesota, Great Northern in Wisconsin, Plain & Fancy, Wood-Mode, Rutt, St. Martin and Kountry Kraft in Pennsylvania, Wellborn in Alabama, Showplace in South Dakota, KraftMaid in Ohio, Omega in Iowa and the MasterBrand plants in Indiana and North Carolina. Fabuwood, WoodConcept, Wolf and Shenandoah describe themselves as assembled in the USA from globally sourced components; Forevermark, FGM, J&K, 21st Century, CNC and Cubitac stock imported cabinets in New Jersey warehouses. Our American-made page lists our lines by plant.
Who owns KraftMaid, Thomasville and the other home-centre brands?
KraftMaid, Merillat, Medallion, Yorktowne and Cardell belong to Cabinetworks Group (Livonia, Michigan; owned by Platinum Equity since 2021). Thomasville is made by MasterBrand for Home Depot; Diamond is MasterBrand's Lowe's programme; Hampton Bay and allen+roth are American Woodmark house programmes for Home Depot and Lowe's — and American Woodmark became part of MasterBrand on May 28 2026.
Are the cabinets at Home Depot and Lowe's the same as dealer cabinets?
Sometimes the plant is the same — Thomasville and Diamond come from the same MasterBrand factories as dealer brands, and KraftMaid is sold both ways. What differs is the service: a home-centre kitchen is designed at the counter and installed by a subcontractor you book separately, while a dealer line is drawn, measured, ordered, inspected and installed by one company, with the warranty claim handled at its desk.
What does 'assembled in the USA from globally sourced components' mean?
The doors, drawer boxes and plywood are made overseas to the brand's specification and the cabinets are put together, and often finished, in an American plant or warehouse. Fabuwood, Wolf and WoodConcept use the phrase on their own pages. It is how a plywood box with dovetail drawers and Blum hardware reaches a Level I price; what you should check is the spec and the warranty, not the label.
What is KCMA certification and does it matter?
The Kitchen Cabinet Manufacturers Association's ANSI/KCMA A161.1 seal means a cabinet passed a battery of tests that simulate a lifetime of use — loaded shelves, 25,000 drawer and door cycles, hot and cold boxes, household liquids on the finish. It is a useful floor, not a ranking: several good custom shops do not certify, and several budget lines do.
Why do you carry Fabuwood and Forevermark but not KraftMaid?
Because our model is design, order, inspect and install with our own crew, and the home-centre programmes are built for a different model. Fabuwood gives us stocked semi-custom twenty minutes from Union with a limited lifetime warranty; Forevermark gives us the lowest price in the showroom with a solid-wood drawer and 22 styles stocked in Edison. Between them and our other thirteen lines we cover every level from Level I to full custom.
Which brands make inset cabinets?
Among our lines: Shiloh (3/8-inch, flush, beaded and square-beaded inset, framed), St. Martin Heritage, Great Northern Eden, Plain & Fancy, Crystal (Current Inset and Keyline) and Kith; nationally also Omega, StarMark, Yorktowne, Wood-Mode, Crown Point, Christiana, QCCI and KraftMaid's 600 Series. Our inset page shows the ones you can see in the showroom.
